Notes on Canine Vaccines & Heartworm Test

Please note that a rabies vaccine requires a booster in 1 year if it is the patient’s first rabies vaccination, OR if no proof of previous vaccination is presented to our staff at the time of service.

The leptospirosis vaccine must be boostered 2-4 weeks later if it is the patient’s first leptospirosis vaccine. The cost for the booster vaccine is $50.

Distemper/parvovirus vaccine combo includes distemper, adenovirus (types 1 and 2), parvovirus and parainfluenza.

With all negative heartworm tests, a portable prescription will be generated for 6 months of heartworm prevention (to fill at pharmacy of your choice), unless appropriate documentation is provided for 12 months of prevention. *See note regarding prescriptions and testing below.

Notes on Lab Testing

Due to our laboratory pick-up schedule, please note the following guidelines:
Bringing a fresh urine sample at opening is best for analysis. Please collect sample in a clean container with a lid. Please check your local clinic’s lab schedule for availability.

Bloodwork samples for comprehensive labs must be obtained by our staff according to your local clinic’s pick-up schedule.

Fecal samples may be collected at any time, but results may be delayed. Please bring a small stool sample in a plastic bag/container when you visit with your pet. If you have 2 pets, please label each container with a name.

View your local clinic’s lab schedule.

Notes on Heartworm Tests

With all negative heartworm tests, a portable prescription will be generated for 6 months of heartworm prevention. Without documentation showing your dog had a negative test 12 months ago and has consistently taken heartworm prevention for the last 12 months, our standard of care is to re-test in 6 months (just $25).

Why is this important to us AND your dog?
The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC)* advises twice-a-year testing for dogs living in areas known to have an abundance of mosquitos and active heartworm disease. If your dog has missed any doses of prevention, it is especially important to test regularly. We re-test in 6 months because heartworms must be approximately 6 months old before an infection can be diagnosed. Catching heartworm disease early is much safer for pets, and easier to treat.
